Privacy policy

This document covers the LocalType app and this website. The plain-language explanation of how voice typing works lives on the privacy page.

Last updated: 27 July 2026

This policy is a draft while LocalType is in testing, and will be finalised before public release.

1. Who is responsible

The legal entity operating LocalType will be named here before public release.

For any question about this policy, or to exercise the rights described below, write to hello@localtype.net.

2. What the app does with your voice

Speech recognition runs on your Android device. Audio captured while you dictate is processed locally to produce text, and that text is placed into the field you were typing in. Your audio is not transmitted to us or to a third-party transcription service for that purpose.

LocalType does not keep an archive of your recordings, and does not use your speech to train or improve speech models.

Voice input is disabled in fields Android marks as password fields.

3. What the app stores on your device

Speech models you download are stored in the application’s private storage. Your settings are stored on the device as well. LocalType application data is excluded from Android’s cloud backup, so it is not copied to a backup service by that mechanism.

Uninstalling the app removes this data from the device.

4. Network access

LocalType requests internet access in order to download the speech model you select. Such a download transmits the request necessary to retrieve the file, which will include technical information such as your IP address, as any download does.

Once a model is installed, transcription does not require a network connection.

5. Accounts, advertising and tracking

LocalType does not require an account. There is no advertising in the application and no behavioural tracking or advertising identifiers are used within it.

6. The beta mailing list

If you sign up for the beta through this website, we process the details you submit: your email address, and optionally your device model, Android version and the language you intend to dictate in.

We use these to send you a beta invitation and occasional updates about the test, and to understand which devices are covered by testing. The legal basis is your consent, which you give by ticking the box on the form.

You can withdraw your consent at any time by writing to hello@localtype.net, after which your details are deleted. We also delete the list once the beta programme ends.

Your details are not sold, and are not shared for anyone else’s marketing.

7. This website

This website sets no tracking cookies and embeds no advertising or analytics scripts.

Web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to Google’s servers and Google receives your IP address as part of it. If this is later replaced by fonts served from our own domain, this section will be updated.

Our web server keeps standard access logs for security and troubleshooting.

8. Diagnostic reports

If you send us a diagnostic report from the app, it contains technical information about your device and configuration: app version, Android version, device model, processor architecture, available memory, the speech model and language you selected, relevant settings, permission status and any error codes.

A diagnostic report does not contain audio, dictated text, clipboard contents or passwords. Reports are used to investigate the problem you reported and are deleted once that is resolved.

9. Payments

LocalType is not on sale yet. When a paid version is released through Google Play, the transaction is handled by Google under its own terms and privacy policy; we do not receive or store your payment details. This section will be expanded before that happens.

10. Your rights

Where we hold personal data about you — in practice, if you are on the beta list — you may ask for a copy of it, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to our use of it. Write to hello@localtype.net and we will act on it.

You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.

11. Changes to this policy

When the app changes in a way that affects this document, the document changes with it, and the date at the top is updated. Substantial changes affecting people on the beta list will be sent to them by email.
